Like blue earrings, green earrings are believed to represent tranquillity, calm, harmony and balance, going hand-in-hand with the peace and relaxation often found in nature.
The classic emerald has always been seen as a regal gemstone, representing luxury, refinement and wealth, while peridot is thought to symbolize good fortune and prosperity. Others, like green tourmaline and green amethyst, can signify growth, renewal and even fertility, linking back to nature and the circle of life.
As with pink earrings, green gemstones can symbolize happiness and compassion, as well as unconditional love, particularly when it comes to emerald and peridot. They’re also heavily rooted in historical and cultural significance, with emeralds being Cleopatra’s gemstone of choice, green amethyst favoured by kings and queens, and Ancient Egyptians once regarding peridot as the ‘gem of the sun’.
Due to their connection with nature and growth, a pair of dark green earrings can be quite a deep and meaningful gift for a friend or loved one. Celebrate a new birth with green amethyst earrings or a birthday in May with emerald green earrings. Or gift a pair of green stud earrings or earrings with green stones to yourself to cherish.
How to clean emerald earrings
As with all coloured gemstones, green emerald earrings still need some TLC to keep them looking beautiful.
We recommend bringing your green earrings to Michael Hill for a professional and complimentary clean. To clean your emerald green earrings at home:
Use mild dish soap and warm water.
Remove build-up by gently rubbing around the setting with either a cotton tip, soft cloth or soft toothbrush. Be sure to only apply very gentle pressure.
Rinse your earrings with water and dry.
It’s highly recommended to remove your emerald earrings before swimming or hopping in the shower to avoid exposing them to heat and moisture. Using harsh detergents and other cleaning agents can also harm your beautiful gemstones, so take care to avoid these. Emerald earrings should also be kept in a protective jewellery box, stored where they won’t rub against other pieces, to protect the surface of your earrings.
Green is a colour for all occasions, whether you’re meeting friends for lunch or attending a gala.
Heading to an event? Go for a sophisticated and streamlined look by matching green drop earrings or studs with a dress or shirt in a similar shade of green. Or, take your green earrings from day to night by wearing neutral shades and earthy tones, as they never go out of style. Team green and gold earrings with a lightweight knit in dusky pink for something playful or an olive green blazer and a chocolate brown dress for a truly stylish and autumnal look.
Colour coordination and complementing tones will play a big role in how you choose to style your earrings. The regal beauty of an emerald pairs particularly well with moody tones like peacock blue, plum and even ruby red, while peridot and green tourmaline come alive when combined with buttery yellows, stark monochromes and soft pastels.
Sometimes, the bigger and bolder your green stone earrings, the better, especially when it comes to constructing the perfect look for a night out. Use green statement earrings to add some sparkle to a little black dress or suit, or pair green hoop earrings (or huggie earrings) with a flowing maxi dress for a touch of elegance.
