Carat Weight Size Guide

by Michael Hill

What is a Diamond Carat?

A carat is the unit of measurement that depicts a diamond's weight. One carat is equal to 1/5 of a gram. It's important to note that the diamond's carat value refers to its weight and not its physical size; as different diamond shapes will feature varying dimensions.

What does 'TW' mean?

In multi-stone jewellery designs, the 'total weight' (TW) is the combined carat weight of all the diamonds in the piece. For instance, the total diamond weight of a halo ring includes both the centre stone and the surrounding smaller stones. The total weight of diamond earrings factors in both earrings in the pair.

Expert Tips

  • As a diamond's carat weight increases, so too does its value. If a high-carat solitaire (single diamond) style is out of reach, consider a halo, cluster, or other multi-stone design to achieve a statement look.

  • Carat is just one factor that determines a diamond's value and appearance. To find the perfect piece for you, also take into account the colour, clarity, and cut - which together with carat are known as the Four Cs. Learn all about diamonds here.
